Microbial and Anticancer Activity: Research & Training Program

1.For Chemistry, Biotechnology, and Pharmaceutical Students & Professionals
This program focuses on the study of microbial activity and anticancer properties of various compounds, including natural products, synthetic drugs, and nanomaterials. Participants will learn about antimicrobial screening techniques, cytotoxicity assays, drug discovery methods, and regulatory considerations for new therapeutic agents.
This training is ideal for students and professionals in pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, microbiology, medicinal chemistry, and nanotechnology who are interested in drug discovery, microbiology, and cancer research.


2.Program Objectives
• Understand the mechanisms of microbial resistance and anticancer activity.
• Learn about in vitro and in vivo testing methods for antimicrobial and anticancer agents.
• Gain hands-on experience in screening bioactive compounds against pathogens and cancer cells.
• Explore nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems for microbial and anticancer therapy.
• Develop research skills for drug formulation, toxicity assessment, and clinical applications.

3. Program Structure
A. Course Duration:
• Short-Term Training: 4-6 weeks (Fundamental concepts, lab techniques, case studies)
• Advanced Training/Research: 3-6 months (Detailed research, hands-on practicals, industry exposure)
B. Eligibility:
• M.Sc. Chemistry, M.Pharm, B.Pharm, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Life Sciences students.
• Researchers and professionals interested in drug discovery, formulation, and microbiology.

4. Course Modules
Module 1: Basics of Microbial & Anticancer Activity
• Introduction to microbial infections and antibiotic resistance
• Overview of cancer biology and tumor microenvironment
• Role of natural and synthetic compounds in drug discovery
Module 2: Antimicrobial Activity Testing
• In Vitro Screening Methods:
o Agar well diffusion, disc diffusion, and broth dilution methods
o Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) & Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC)
o Biofilm inhibition studies
• Antimicrobial Mechanisms of Action:
o Cell membrane disruption, enzyme inhibition, DNA/RNA targeting
Module 3: Anticancer Drug Discovery & Cytotoxicity Assays
• Cancer Cell Culture Techniques
• In Vitro Cytotoxicity Screening:
o MTT, MTS, and XTT assays
o Trypan blue exclusion test
o Apoptosis detection assays (Annexin V, Caspase Assays)
• Molecular Mechanisms of Anticancer Drugs:
o DNA intercalation, ROS generation, apoptosis induction
Module 4: Natural Products & Nanotechnology in Drug Discovery
• Plant-Derived & Marine Bioactive Compounds for antimicrobial and anticancer therapy
• Nanoparticles in Drug Delivery:
o Liposomes, metal nanoparticles, polymeric nanoparticles
o Targeted drug delivery & bioavailability enhancement
Module 5: Regulatory & Clinical Considerations
• Regulatory Guidelines for Drug Testing (FDA, ICH, WHO)
• Toxicity Assessment & Preclinical Studies
• Clinical Trial Phases & Ethical Considerations
Module 6: Hands-on Research & Industry Exposure
• Experimental Analysis of Microbial & Anticancer Activity
• Case Studies on Drug Development
• Data Interpretation & Research Paper Writing
